Reading a Supplement Label Without the Hype

Marketing buzzwords make supplements confusing. Here's how to cut through the noise and judge a product on what actually matters.

Supplement labels are designed to sell, not to inform. Learning to read past the marketing helps you spend your money on things that work.

Look for real doses

A product can list an impressive-sounding ingredient and include a tiny, useless amount. For creatine, research supports around 3 to 5g per day. A snack delivering 1.5g per serving is a meaningful, honest contribution, not fairy dust.

Watch for proprietary blends

When a label hides amounts inside a proprietary blend, you can't tell how much of anything you're getting. Transparent, itemized labels are a good sign.

Ingredients you can pronounce

A short list of recognizable ingredients usually beats a long list of additives. Real fruit, oats, and protein are a better foundation than a wall of chemistry.

Match the format to your life

The fanciest formula is worthless if it sits unused in a cupboard. Choose a format you'll actually enjoy and stick with, whether that's a shake, a capsule, or a tropical snack bar.

Trust, then verify

Good brands are proud of their numbers and show them clearly. When in doubt, look for the dose, the ingredient list, and a flavor you'll come back to.
